11) Mississippi - Oil Rigs, Gulf of Mexico:
The first three dive shops I phoned in this state offered me the same advice: "Hell, there ain’t no diving in Mississippi!" This proved to be one of the biggest misconceptions of the entire trip. I kept calling and eventually found a shop in Biloxi that offered dive charters to the oil rigs.

12) Louisiana - Oil Rigs, Gulf of Mexico:
We geared up as I watched Butch pull coveralls over his wetsuit, apparently to protect it from barnacles and other sharp objects. He looked like a diving long shoreman, an image not unpleasant to Butch. While coveralls aren’t unusual in these waters, many veterans consider the cloth material more of a snag hazard and don’t wear them.

13) Alabama - Wrecks, etc. Gulf of Mexico:
Malcolm and I rode the swells back to the inlet as I decided Alabama diving was enjoyable, even in windy weather. An hour out, nice clean water, and a quick return. It’s fun diving with a minimum investment of time and effort. Another unique attraction in these waters is a fleet of army tanks deposited along the sea floor.
